Organic Milk Shortages Hit Consumers Hard

Have you heard the news about the drastic shortage of organic milk in supermarkets? You heard me correctly, while there’s never been a stronger demand for the premium priced milk, there’s a serious problem with the supply of it. Not only is it flying off the shelves, the farmers producing organic milk are having serious issues producing it at a profit. As a result, you may be left disappointed the next time you visit the supermarket looking for your favorite brands. Now would be a good time to stock up on a few week’s worth of supply, because you might not be able to get it on your next trip.

Why Is There A Shortage Of Organic Milk Supply?

Organic milk shortages aren’t a new phenomenon, because by design it is not easy to produce. Milk of the organic variety needs to go through stringent checks before they are certified to be organic by the regulators, and even though the growth of farms has increased in the past decade, it hasn’t been able to keep up with the demand. There are other factors as well, including the higher prices of producing organic milk which are causing some farmers to reduce production or even shut down altogether. It’s certainly not a promising sign indeed for lovers of this variety of milk.

Normally, these shortages are often followed by price hikes as farmers look to recoup their increased costs. It’s a really tough time for them, and consumers could be the next ones in line to feel the pinch if the past is any indicator of what is to come. Companies are proposing a hike of up to 60 cents a gallon for organic milk, and it might be a bit too much to ask of consumers who are already struggling with increased costs of living themselves. Many people might opt to abandon drinking milk of the organic variety altogether, and go back to “normal” milk.

What Next For Organic Milk?

The worst case scenario is that all of these developments could trigger a chain reaction within the industry that will cause the cost of organic milk to skyrocket and ultimately make it inaccessible to the public. This would be a grave shame, so if you’re keen on drinking milk of the organic variety for the years to come, then it may be time to bite the bullet and pay the increased prices.
